I became a first time mom in July of 2004. My daughter, Abigail, tried to be born at 27 weeks. Fortunately, she held off until she was 35 weeks, and we count our blessings that she was a healthy baby. The nurse in the hospital told me "Make sure everyone washes their hands before touching her — we do not want to see her back in the hospital being sick." I thought to myself — no problem — I will just ask my family and friends to wash their hands and there is no way a stranger would reach in and touch her. How wrong I was.
Right away, visitors could not wait to get their hands on her. I did not realize how awkward it would feel asking my own family and friends to wash their hands first. I was then totally shocked when several strangers reached in to touch her in her stroller when I was in elevators, at the supermarket, or in a waiting room. All I could think was "Where were those hands? Did the person wash after going to the bathroom? Did the person have a cold? Did they just touch something that had cold germs on it? Did they touch raw food? The questions went on and on. I tried to deal with it the best I could. Soon, Abbie started putting her hands in her mouth non-stop. Often, I could not wipe her hands off in time before she put them in her mouth after someone touched them. Now it REALLY drove me crazy. Then all this talk started up about Flu season, RSV, how babies under 6 months are at high risk for all of these things. I had enough. So, I created the first simple version of the "Please Wash" sign for myself. The first day I was out and about with it, I saw people reading it from several feet away. After a few weeks, I noticed it was working. What I was not expecting was how many people asked me, "Where did you get that sign? I hate when people touch my baby's hands."
Shortly after, the My Tiny Hands 'Please Wash" Sign was created. I did not want any other parents to have to feel the way I did when I saw someone approaching my baby. It acts as a signal to strangers, and a reminder to family members.
